Sol Y Sombra
Genevieve Obregon and Matthew Guerra would like to formally invite flamenco aficionados around the state to their production "Sol y Sombra."
"Sol y Sombra" serves as the culminating showcase following Genevieve Obregon and Matthew Guerra's collaboration as part of the Texas Folklife Apprenticeship Program.
The program aims to keep Texas's living traditions alive by supporting art forms that might otherwise be lost -- preserving and celebrating the cultural richness of communities across Texas.
This year the Folklife supported 7 groups of mentors and apprentices in fields from Texas Conjunto Accordion to Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba. Matthew and Genevieve were honored to be included as flamenco artists.
Texas Folklife gave mentors the means to engage in one-on-one training in a heritage practice to a dedicated apprentice over the course of eight months. During that time Genevieve served as Matthew's mentor instructing him in the art of traditional flamenco tablao.
Matthew and Genevieve would like to express their gratitude for this grant which allowed them to pass knowledge within and between communities and allowed them to pass down this traditional art form to the next generation.
The apprentice-mentor duo is eager to present their work to an audience of flamenco aficionados in Texas and share the stage with fellow professional artists Drea Pacot (dance), Randy Cordero (guitar), and Texas Folklife Apprenticeship Program alum Chayito Champion (vocals).
We would like to recognize and honor the contribution of the late, great Sonia Chapa to the flamenco community of South Texas and dedicate this show to her beautiful memory.
"Sol y Sombra" will show at Slab Cinema Arthouse (134 Blue Star; San Antonio, TX 78201) on Friday, August 14th. Doors will open at 8pm and the show will begin at 8:15 pm.
